Akedo Showten Ramen, Langley

I first moved to Langley from Vancouver a few years back and one of my biggest food dilemmas was where would I now go to get my ramen fix. Growing up in Asia, I was surrounded by Japanese food and I’ve always appreciated Japanese cuisine and the need to partake in authentic Japanese flavours at least once a week is real. It didn’t help that after watching The Ramen Girl (a romantic comedy starring Brittany Murphy) back in 2008, I saw how much effort is put into a bowl of ramen.

Although there’s a lot of Japanese sushi places in Langley, ramen places are only a handful. Akedo Showten, is probably the most popular one in my opinion (in the past, I’ve had to phone in to ask if they were still serving as they run out sometimes).

Today I was lucky, I took a late lunch break from work and came in at 2pm and the place was packed. Granted the restaurant is small but it’s organized efficiently, it was busy and as people were leaving, more would arrive.

I always seek ramen or pho when I’m sick or feeling under the weather especially as winter is upon us. Their ramens are different from the norm as the standard protein that goes with it is chicken while usually it’s chashu or pork. They do have chashu as a side or in their Meatlovers ramen. I ordered the Ajitama ramen and it already comes with ramen egg (ramen egg is everything). Then you choose your broth and I got their most popular black broth which is soy-based as recommended by the server.

I also ordered chicken karaage on the side because I’m just a hungry person all the time. Something dry and crunchy to balance out the soupy ramen.

Finally my most anticipated ramen has arrived 🙂

Noodles are so chewy and the broth is just creamy and salted the way I like it. I feel myself getting better with every sip.

I checked their website and they have their second branch in New Westminster recently opened. Makes sense they need to share their good ramen to others.
